Jimmy Morgan, I agree that social construct theories would best explain gang affiliation problems by using the social disorganization theory. The social disorganization theory came from research conducted in Chicago by Shaw and McKay (Review of the roots of youth violence, 2016). They discovered that rates of crime were not evenly dispersed across time and apace in Chicago but instead crime tended to be concentrated in particular areas of the city. The location of crime remained stable within different areas of the city despite continual changes in the populations who lived in each area. In neighborhoods with high crime rates, the rates remained high regardless of which racial or ethnic group happened to live there at any particular time…
The Crips are a primarily African-American gang that originated in Los Angeles, California in the 1969 (Howell, 2011). Raymond Washington and Stanley Williams founded the gang. The two had merged to form an autonomous alliance of two gangs. However, recently, the gang has disintegrated into various individual sets, which are often fighting each other. The Crips are considered by law enforcement as one of the largest and most dangerous gangs in the United States with an estimated membership of thirty-five thousand people as of 2008 (Howell, 2011).…
The MS-13 gang, well known as Mara Salvatrucha 13, is one of the most organized and violently dangerous gangs in the United States. The gang was established in the 1980, in the predominately Spanish speaking parts of Los Angeles, initially starting off with refugees who were in nature calm and in control. However, some Mexican immigrants began their power guiding and controlling these individuals into an underworld organization, which quickly began to harden the individuals. Once this occurred in the El Salvadorian neighborhoods, the immigrants wanted to organize themselves, so they decided to come up with a name for themselves.…
Sadat Cano Arizona State University Unique Gang In the United States CJS 468 1/2/2015 What makes the gangs in the United States unique is that gang members in the United States are more likely to get arrested for drug and alcohol related crimes than non-gang members. This means that for every city, an average “¾ of the population report” (Donnelley, 2014) gang activity.…
There are a few differences in gangs from the 1960s and the gangs of today. During the 60s, if you joined a gang it was for the rest of your life. The only way you can get out is to die. The gang members were more ruthless back in the day, because they had lethal weapons of all kinds. Gang members were true to their gang, they obeyed their leader, and they would give up…

People in gangs usually live a short, violent, and scary life. In both the article “What’s it like to be a gang member” by Bill Lee and the poem “We real cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks, certain problems and challenges that happen in gang life are shown. Although the article explains gang life through many detailed paragraphs, the poem on the other hand, explains gang life through just a few stanzas, but they both portray Gang life. In The article, Bill Lee wrote about himself, as a former gang member, he talks about his life in a gang.…
It is not only social factors or political factors that lead gang violence. Personal factors play an important part in gangs choosing violence and it is the most frequent cause of violence by gang members. Especially when it comes to seek revenge for perceived slights or previous disputes gangs use their utmost power and resources (Buchanan, 2014). A member can be attacked for belonging to a rival gang, living in the same neighborhood of a different gang, or to settle an old score between gang members or their families. Sometimes revenge leads to a series of crimes.…
As a commander of the gang unit, If I was responsible for intervening in a cycle of escalating violence among five prevalent youth gangs in my jurisdiction. What can I do to stop the escalation of inter-gang violence? First, I would set up a meeting with all the top members one on one so that I can get a feel for what type of feelings they are having among others in the community and how it is affecting them. According to pg. 153 "traditional organized crime was nationality based; today's organized crime is overwhelmingly racially based, but with occasional nationalistic overlay"(Hoover, 2014).…
The topic in which I am researching is the street culture of gangs in a caucasian dominant world. I which I will discuss comparison of the life of gang members and also how their lifestyle affects the lives of others in their own community and in the “dominant culture’s” world as well. I used resources from Missouri State, the article by Armond R. Towns, and a law enforcement magazine called Police Mag to create my essay. http://people.missouristate.edu/michaelcarlie/what_i_learned_about/gangs/culture.htm…
The shift to a criminal justice system based on partnerships between law enforcement and the community from the previous idea of strict punishment and a lock-them-up attitude has only occurred in recent years. This means there has been ample time for few programs to be implemented to prevent gang member offending and to rehabilitate gang members. Due to the small number of programs that have been implemented in recent years, only a small amount of research has been done to see if these programs are effective. Furthermore, only a portion of this research conducted has been conclusive. One reason for the largely inconclusive research is the programs themselves are not uniform.…
57,000 Central American children are coming to the U.S. and our country is in dispute about what to do with them, the gangs that are causing people to fear for their lives and flee. The paragraph, “Who are these Gang Members” acknowledges how most gang members were deported from the US.…

Essy Lamb Intro to Sociology Dr. Castro “Gang Leader for a Day” Course Paper Education and poverty are inversely correlated. This also goes the other way, meaning that a person with little to no education has a very high risk of being bellow the poverty line. Venkatesh has several conversations with different people about education verses poverty. In one conversation, he is talking to Mrs. Bailey.…
