Gandaulf's Role In The Hobbit

In the book The Hobbit, there are three characters that play a very important role in the book. The characters alter the fairytale in various ways. Gandalf, Thorin, and Smaug, are the three main characters that play extremely important roles in this novel. “Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found . I have found that it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love,” said Gandalf. Gandalf is a wizard with power apart from most other characters. Gandalf’s most important role in The Hobbit, was Bilbo’s advisor and knowledgeable figure. He persuaded Bilbo to go on the journey with the dwarves because he knew that Bilbo was capable of defeating Smaug. After Gandalf leaves the group at the edge of Mirkwood (Tolkien Ch. 7), Bilbo has realized his new found courageousness and cleverness, thanks to Gandalf. Gandalf notices Bilbo’s growth and realized he does not need his physical presence to guide him to the home of the Elvenking or Smaug’s lair. In the end, Gandalf visits Bilbo in his home. Thorin is the leader of the dwarves, and takes himself and his job very resolutely. In the beginning of the novel, he seems very self involved. By the time the dragon was defeated, he is seen as more of a hero. At first, Thorin was very skeptical of Bilbo Baggings, but by the end he not only helped Bilbo find his new self, but he began to accept him as a valuable member of their journey.
