In today’s society, gambling is all around us. It feels like there is a casino is almost every town. When there is not a casino to be found, there are convenience stores located in every town. Those are the stores with the scratch off 1-10$ dollar tickets and even have the Powerball tickets. Even when you are in your own house, gambling can find you. Log onto a computer or phone and gambling is right at your fingertips. In 1931 the first casino opened. Since then, there are over 1500 casinos in the united states and growing. With the increase in casinos and easier ways to gamble, the question remains, should gambling be illegal or legal? One must agree, gambling makes an enormous amount of money. The percentage of addicted adults in the United States in 2014 is 2.2%. In many cases, people spend every dime they have in a casino trying to win. The sad reality is that homeowners can lose their homes, their family can leave them stranded due to their intolerable gambling, and many never fully recover from the downfall of addiction. The odds are stacked against these people. The odds of winning ranging from 1 in 50 thousand to 1 in 34 million. With the odds stacked against people, why would they play? Every time you press that button or pull that lever in a casino, your brain gets a rush a dopamine (the pleasure neurotransmitter in your brain). It is a very addicting neurotransmitter. The casinos know this and exploit it. Every now and then the game you are playing will say “free spins” or “plus 10 credits.” This sends dopamine to your brain and causes you to stay longer. Casinos also monitor your behavior. When you’re feeling down or ready to leave, someone might show up next to you offering a free drink or some food.
