As they said: “He is an angel, he must have been coming for the child, but the poor fellow is old that the rain knocked him down.” In this case, he was referring to the angel that as they being religious people, and seeing a child was sick, they probably thought the angel was coming for the kid. Consequently, I think, he created this character to make people believe more in their religion which was the Catholicism I believe.
