Fungal Keratitis
Overview
Keratitis is a generalized term used for the ‘Inflammation of Cornea'. Fungal Infection cause the inflammation of cornea for example Fusarium (one type of fungi) when causes Keratitis it is called 'Fusarium Keratitis'. Keratitis may be Superficial or deep, superficial Keratitis affects the superficial layers of cornea and after treatment leaves no scar while the deep Fungal Keratitis may or may not leave a scar after healing which may or may not affect vision of the patient
Causes
There is different type of fungi causing Keratitis:
1. Fusarium: most commonly fungi causing the fungal Keratitis. 67% of the total cases are caused by this fungus
2. Aspergillius: 10.5% of the condition is caused by this fungus
3. Candida: 10% of disease is caused by this fungus …show more content…

Differential Diagnosis
It may not be misdiagnosed with Keratitis nummularis which is also a viral disease but not specific to cornea only. Or the dendritic Keratitis/Keratitis herpetis caused by virus also form corneal ulceration but of detritus pattern. It must also be differentiated from filiform Keratitis/ Keratitis sicca that are not an infectious disease and often associated with dry eye syndrome. Punctuate Keratitis which is idiopathic. Keratitis is also caused by Rosacea Keratitis is also a skin disease. Treatment
Treatment varies according to the type of fungi causing the condition.
The drug of choice for filamentous Keratitis is Natamycin ophthalmic suspension
Used for Candida infection is Fluconazole ophthalmic solution
In case both of them fail to respond we use a broad spectrum anti fungal like Amphotericin B but it can be toxic and should be used with great precaution
Prevention
Protective Eye Glasses for the agriculture field workers.
Use Eye glasses instead of contact lens.
Keep your eyes clean; wash them with cold water when you wash your face.
