Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA)

Decent Essays
A functional behavioral assessment (FBA) is performed in order to provide information to determine why a student is engaging in a problem behavior. Students usually repeat behaviors in order to avoid or escape an unpleasant situation or task or in order to seek attention. For example a student may act out in class during math because the student finds the task difficult or boring. Another example is a student may act out in class in order to receive attention from the teacher or his/her peers. A contingency-based self-management plan helps the student to recognize the signs that his/her behavior is about to progress and giving them a way to prevent that behavior. Such as, a quite place or calm down

The team then plans the assessment and collects data on the behavior, which one can see that this is completed under the interviews and the collection data section of the report. This is where the team is collecting data on Jason behavior. Once again, this process is accomplished in order to determine the function of the behavior, since the function is the sources of the students behaving the way he/she does. The team then analyzes the data and put together a hypothesis statement. The report clearly states this component of FBA under the behavioral hypothesis…

Summary of Strategy. This is a behavior monitoring strategy that promotes academic performance and attention behavior, it is a student-centered strategy that can be used to increase on-task behavior by encouraging monitoring of their own behavior (Martel, 2009). Self-monitoring has two components, measurement and evaluation (Loftin, 2005): that is, the student (1) measures and records his or her own behavior(measurement), and then (2) compares that recorded behavior to pre-determined standard (evaluation) (Wright, 2013). Self-monitoring can take on many forms, either form that it takes on it is utilized as a strategy to get the student to recognize the differences in what they are demonstrating and what should be demonstrated.…

As I shadowed the counselor at Tucker Middle School for a summer program, I realized that some of the benefits of implementing early intervention and RTI (Response to Intervention) for children with early signs of a learning disability is serious topic. Instead of just placing students in special education programs educators must assess and evaluate students, as well as trying early intervention programs which help delay disabilities or stop the disability from forming or progressing. I’ve always heard a little about the RTI, but one that differed from what I have encountered in the school system is the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). This allows a systematic process for gathering information that helps determine the relationship between…

Other students can see and recognize and learn from each other's behaviors and learn what the consequences are. A good example used in the chapter was if students are placed in time out due to misbehaving with each other. Students are placed very close to each other and given a goal of working out their differences. What I liked about this is that the timeout was for both parties and both parties had to figure out a plan to behave better and have a discussion about their actions. Use of operant conditioning and behavioral analysis in the classroom can help manage different behaviors in the classroom when used…

The following Antecedent-Behavior-Consequences (ABC) Chart has been prepared for Jackson K. Direct observation was done during his Integrated Algebra 1A class to complete the ABC chart. The purpose was to identify “environmental and contextual variables that support challenging behavior” (Chandler and Dahlquist, 70). There are some consequences that are often related to appropriate and challenging behaviors, some desirable and others not. Unfortunately, oftentimes students that engage in challenging behaviors are removed from the learning environment. This is not helpful because the function of this behavior is avoidance and so the behavior is successful from the student’s perspective.…
