I am a junior at Bowdoin College majoring in Earth and Oceanographic Science (EOS). In the 2018 spring semester I will be studying abroad with SEA Semester and completing a semester-long research project about carbon cycling in the sub-Antarctic Ocean. Although my major, earth and oceanographic science, has exposed me to plate tectonics, sedimentary systems, and biogeochemical cycling, I have focused my major mostly on ocean systems. Within oceanography I am most interested in marine nutrient cycling, ocean acidification, and water quality monitoring of coastal ecosystems.
This past summer I conducted research through the Bowdoin EOS Dept. on a spectrophotometric method development to improve the accuracy and precision of pH measurements. The goal of the project was to improve monitoring and quantification of coastal ocean acidification in the Gulf of Maine. This research project improved my data analysis skills by learning how to use R and Prism, and my

I’m still undecided if I want to do research, which is why I want to spend this summer participating in a REU. Another possibility I have considered is a lab technician, because this past summer I spent two weeks at UC Davis with Michele LaVigne working on a Laser-Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) for her paleooceanographic research on bamboo coral dating. I really enjoyed learning how the LA-ICP-MS worked. Additionally, I am a lab project assistant for the course Biogeochemistry, which has allowed me to work on a Gas Chromatograph Spectrometer. Working with instruments is intellectually challenging and very interesting to me. I will definitely continue with ocean sciences, whether I do that through research and graduate school or becoming a lab technician, I believe that the skills I can gain from this REU would be beneficial to both career

For years this planet has been undergoing vast changes in its environment, wildlife, and mostly our oceans. The acidifying of our oceans is because of all the Carbon Dioxide that is absorbed by seawater. A chemical reaction that occur which reduces seawater's pH. All of the Carbon Dioxide is being put into our atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels. Calcium carbonate minerals are the building blocks for the skeletons of shells of many marine organisms. In certain areas where life now congregates in the ocean, the seawater, is supersaturated with calcium carbonate mineral.…

I believe this is strong evidence of climate change. Modern humans have been around for around 200,000 years (NHM), only a fraction of 50 million, yet the rate at which ocean acidification has occurred has been the quickest ever recorded. In humans, the blood is around a 7.4 on the pH scale, and even the smallest change, such as 0.2, can cause problems like seizures or death (Bennet). If the smallest change can make a difference in a human, a small change in acidity can make an even bigger difference in smaller organisms. These changes can cause major problems with the small organisms themselves, or they can cause the organism to die off.…

One third of all atmospheric carbon dioxide ends up in the ocean (Saba G.K, Schofield O, Trres J.J, et al. 2012). Today the increasing oceanic carbon dioxide is causing a small decrease in pH leading to a slightly more acidic ocean, which is slowly affecting the more polar marine organisms. Antarctic krill, (Euphausia superba) is one of the key organisms required to keep a balanced, stable ecosystem. They are resilient creatures and survive in a range of depths in Antarctic oceans. A study observed the effect of different carbon dioxide levels on fertilised Antarctic krill eggs.…

Geographical processes: Oceans should have a pH level of around 8.2, However has fallen 0.1 pH. If it continues to drop it will be around 7.8 by 2100. Monitoring the pH levels in oceans is extremely important as it affects the marine eco-system (Kolbert, 2016). The Great Barrier Reef is one example of the destruction that ocean acidification can make. Acidification along with ocean warming poses greater threats in coral bleaching.…

As a biology major taking a pre-med path I have had the chance to do a numerous amount of laboratories. I was able to be at animal biology, chemistry, general biology, and a plant biology laboratory. I haven't had any research experience however, I recently learned about this program, and it intrigued me to be able to achieve some type of research experience through a school like UCSD. Other than the experiences I have had throughout the past labs in school I haven't had a chance to get an opportunity at a research level.…

Throughout this semester and this class, I have learned more than I thought I ever would. I took the same freshman seminar class at UNCW back in 2013, but did not really pay attention, and now I am paying for that. There are several things that I learned about myself through this class especially how close I am to achieving my Associates degree! I also learned that I am introvert throughout various personality tests, better ways for me to manage my time, studies, and work. The career that I would like to pursue would be a geologist or a sustainable development degree, (as I am still deciding), but these careers excite me because they involve the outdoors and ways to help people, the environment, and everything around us.…

From surfing, swimming, fishing, scuba diving, and going on boat rides on the beach most of us don’t really know what’s going on in our oceans. In reality besides the waste that goes in there’s actually acidification in our waters. Acidification is when the ocean uptakes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, this also means the pH levels are lowering. The ocean acidification is negatively taking over our environment and there are barely any benefits that come with it. This essay will provide information about acidification such as what it’s known for, the affects, the future of acidification, what’s causing it, benefits and also solutions that may help.…

Garbage reduction along with toxins deplete the oxygen content of the water consequently making it impractical for many life figure including larger species like dolphins, shark, seals and penguins to survive. Human manipulation is another issue when it involves aquatic conservation. We account for major fishery consumption, ultimately, altering the biodiversity of these areas. In reference to the Marine Iguana, they are adapted to warmer weather; however, climate changes, as a result of human pollution and harm done to the ozone, has led to extended warm or cool periods that ultimately affects the ability of these organisms to adapt to their natural habitats. This contributes to sudden and unwanted death.…

Most aquarists that have an irregular pH would rather use a natural means of balancing the pH of salt water because of the beneficial effects on, not only the overall water chemistry, but the non-lethal effects on the waters inhabitants. A very common pH balancer is crushed coral, which is a chemical mixture of solid aragonite. Aragonite is a polymorph of calcium carbonate, and a natural pH buffer. Crushed coral could quite possibly be the solution for reversing ocean acidification, however, like adding a base to the ocean it is economically improbable. When coral dies in the ocean an area of calcium carbonate deposits are all that is left.…

The documentary Chasing Coral follows the journey of Richard Vevers, a former “ad man”, as he uncovers the beauty and demise of coral reefs. His love for the ocean began at 16 when he first started diving and this particular quest initiated when he noticed that is favorite creature, sea dragons, were disappearing. This inspired Richard to create the non-profit The Ocean Agency. In an effort to bring about awareness to changes occuring in the ocean Richard and the non-profit created the project XL Catlin Seaview Survey. This project used 360 degree photographic technology to bring Google Street View underwater, creating an interactive platform that allows everyone to explore the wonders of our coral reefs.…
