OVERVIEW
To enable residents to become proficient in the preparation of a frozen section for rapid diagnosis and intra-operative consultation. The resident will be expected to perform gross and microscopic examination of specimens as well as reporting of results. The staff Pathologist on duty supervises the resident and will co-signs all reports.
OBJECTIVES
1. MEDICAL EXPERT
1.1. Appropriate gross examination, dissection, and selection/sampling of fresh tissue for microscopic review
1.2. Appropriate technique in embedding, cutting, and staining of frozen sections

Instruct and work effectively and efficiently with junior residents and technical staff during frozen section
5.3. Understand the approximate rates of diagnostic accuracy, false positives and false negatives during frozen section, and be able to communicate reasons of uncertainty to the surgical team
5.4. Recognize quality control procedures for frozen section diagnosis (comparison to final diagnosis)

6.1. Review text and papers relevant to common frozen section diagnosis
6.2. Focus on developing and practicing techniques used in embedding, cutting, and staining of frozen sections
