I heard Jake call from the front office while I was making a greasy “pepperoni lover’s” pizza. “Yeah just a second I’ll be right there.” I answered back, feeling a tiny jolt in my stomach. I had just started working maybe a couple months max, and I was still stepping lightly because I didn’t want to disturb the way anyone did his or her own jobs. Jake was a driver, but tonight he was managing because my boss’s son was sick. I carefully placed the now heavy pizza onto the conveyor belt that brought the pizzas through the oven. I look at the smooth blue-gray floor tiles trying to think of an excuse.
“I work that day, sorry” I sort of stuttered. Flustered by the sudden offer to join their plans. I did have to work that day, but not until 3 or 3:30, but they didn’t need to know that.
