Friendship is a state of mutual trust and support between allied nations. Towards the end of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam and Laila eventually find a way to form an unbreakable bond even though Mariam was bitter about not having a baby. In the novel, it flashes back to when “She remembered all the afternoons they had spent together, braiding eachother’s hair, Mariam listening patiently to her random thought and ordinary stories with an air of gratitude” (Hosseini ). This makes it clear how close they are and what they had done back then when everything seemed perfect. Along with forming an unbreakable bond, both women married the same abusive man. They had each other’s back and Mariam realized that, “… Nobody’s ever stood up for me like that before” (Hosseini 249). Although Mariam and Laila may fight every once in awhile, they are both always there for each other when needed. Rasheed brings Mariam and Laila together and helps form the bond between them. If not for Rasheed, Mariam and Laila would have not formed the strong bond they have today. Rasheed is a great example of the internal conflict by being impulsive and inhumane. He displayed many acts of horrible behavior upon Mariam and Laila, even attempting to kill Mariam. Soon Rasheed will become fully aware, that his rage and vexation will lead to his death. After Mariam had killed Rasheed, she begins to realize how “this was the first time that she was deciding the course of her own life” (Housseini 349).
