One of their more well-known advertisements is the “Friends are Waiting” commercial. This commercial incorporates an adorable yellow Labrador puppy and his owner. “Friends are Waiting” begins by showing the owner welcoming his new puppy into his home for the very first time. As the commercial proceeds the two are shown developing an inseparable bond. The puppy truly does become the man’s best friend and most loyal companion. In addition, playing in the background throughout the commercial is a song; the song is very upbeat and lighthearted which is corresponding to the relationship that has developed between the man and his dog. As the commercial progresses the man is shown leaving with his friends for a night out while holding a case of Budweiser. At this point the emotion in the commercial changes from positive and cheerful to worrisome and sad. Pathos and emotion was the main rhetorical appeal used to display their argument against drunk driving to their audience. In addition, through the use of pathos it helped them establish the ethical rhetorical technique; caring for the general well-being of each of their consumers and their friends at home waiting. By elaborating on the simple fact drinking and driving is illegal and there are smarter decisions that could be made to prevent driving and causing an accident.
