A Friend of Mine is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Melbourne. It is a fairly young studio, started by Suzy Tuxen in 2009. Since then it has created a spectrum of varied design work, which has been, and is a source of international inspiration.

Suzy started the studio after five years of experience in the design field. During this time she worked at Studio Round, based in Melbourne, then moved to UK and worked with Multistorey a London-based design agency. The work produced by A Friend of Mine is a reflection of what she learnt and experienced at that time. While her love for custom typography began at Round, her work at Multistorey went beyond her knowledge in graphic design; she was able to explore different mediums and materials.

She periodically meets people to catch up. A lot of business is derived through referrals through friends and from satisfied clients.

The location of the studio leads them to new clients, as it is based in the heart of the city surrounded by other businesses. They lease out their studio space (a spare working desk) to individuals. In the past they have got a project through the commercial tenant.

Suzy’s interviews and the studios work have been featured in Desktop Magazine, Designboom, The Design Files, The Younger Magazine and Women of Graphic Design. The story and project details of the 2011 VCE Season of Excellence are a part of the Viscomm: A Guide to Visual Communication Design, a textbook for classrooms.

The studio is known in the design industry and has been nominated and won several awards. Voted as Australia’s Top 4 Art Directors, by Desktop Magazine Peer Review, in 2014; finalists at Premier’s Design Awards for Supergraph and runner up in the Australia-wide Qantas SOYA Award for Communication

In a way it represents the beginning of my journey at Iowa State, for it is the first class room I had ever been in as a student, and its represents hours and hours of hard work and dedication to my major. It is a rather bittersweet place with times where it became a place to put my work on display as well as a place to spend many long nights and very early mornings working and developing. The space itself physically is not a room by traditional means it has no doors and stall like walls that rise above the ground six to eight inches as well as an opening at the top.…

Our visual perception and interpretations underpin a process within a conceptual approach forcing us to visually see a representation and reaffirming our sense of identity and the realism of the photographic image laid before us because of this it is easy to see why long term lasting effects ripple though individuals lives, creating a negative self-image. The appearance of forms that for decades were forbidden: pediments and arches, towers and domes, appear again during the postmodernism era. As Christian Norberg-Schulz stated, “Aren’t they just the manifestation of superficial nostalgia?”.1 Postmodernism came as a protest against the sterile emptiness of ‘late modern’ architecture, which lacks the satisfactory reference to everyday world of things. Modern architecture was always abstract and drew away from reality. It became non-figurative, as it abandoned ‘figures’ that constituted the basis of architecture of the past.2 The referred ‘architectural figure’ was a term coined by Paolo Portoghesi in the late 1970s to describe architectural design during Postmodernism, in which attempts were…
