This model is a very effective tool for assessing family dynamics. The model examines a variety of aspects including family composition, family demographic data, in addition to the family’s physical, social, psychosocial, spiritual, economic, and safety components (Perry, Hockenberry, Lowdermilk, Wilson, 2014). The Model is comprised of many aspects that involve identifying data about the family such as name, address, phone, composition, type, cultural and ethnic background, religion, social status, and leisure time activities (Perry et al., 2014). It also involves addressing the developmental stages and history of the family and environmental data about the family such as home, neighborhood, community, and support systems and networks (Perry et al., 2014). The model also examines family structure which includes communication patterns, power structure, role structure, and family values. Another component of the Friedman family assessment model is examining the family function. This component examines affective function, socialization function, and health care function. Lack of transportation is a big determinant of health care as people who lack transportation may find it difficult to get to their health care providers. Lack of transportation can lead patients to arrive late to their appointments, miss their appointment, and be hesitant to follow up with providers (CCMU, 2013). Transportations affect people’s ability to get to their providers office on a timely fashion and to be able to remain to be seen by their provider. The lack of transportation can greatly hinder the person’s ability to access health care. Literacy and health literacy are very important determinants of health (CCMU, 2013). Illiterate people and people who are illiterate when it comes to health care terminology can receive inadequate care because they may not understand the providers’ explanations of disease process or they may not grasp the medical jargon (CCMU, 2013).
