Speech, rights, equality. How do all of these statements relate? Freedom. Freedom is what country fought for, and they earned it. Everyone knows how much trouble the soldiers went through to earn our freedom. The soldiers went through so much training to get ready to fight for the freedom we have. Do the citizens know or feel like they are free, even though they’re free. The people are free, our country is free. Every American has the freedom of speech, helping each other out, and equality. Roosevelt wants to make it clear that freedom is earned, not given. The soldiers fought for the freedom the people have. His claim is to make the country go to war so the freedom is earned and the people can keep their freedom. Not to mention, Maya Angelou was a singer, poet, memoirists and a civil rights activist. She wrote a poem called “The Caged Bird”. Angelou's poem reveals “ His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream, his wings are clipped and his feet are tied” (327). As a matter of fact, Angelou is explaining what it means to be free even though she isn’t saying it in the text. Another key point is Kurt Vonnegut was an American writer, he published 14 novels, three short story collections, five plays and five works of nonfiction. Vonnegut wrote a short story named “Harrison Bergeron”. Kurt's story reveals “ They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than no else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else”. In addition, Vonnegut is stating that to be equal, you need to be free.
