Since the discovery of the New World, America has been viewed as a land of freedom and opportunity. Its distance from Europe forced England to have limited control over the New World and its inhabitants. This allowed settlers to make their own choices, even if they did not coincide with popular opinion. This new idea was freedom and the power of choice. This new idea became an ideal for society and helped to define what America is and what it means to be an American. America is the land of the free. Today, these freedoms apply to all of those who live and work in the United States. The first settlers who came to America came in search of opportunity. For some, it was the opportunity to earn financial success, but others came in search of freedom from England’s rule. One of the main reasons settlers traveled to America was to escape religious persecution. In England, the Catholic church was persecuting Puritans. The new colonies offered Puritans and other religions the opportunity and freedom to practice and expand their religions.
