Both upset, his mom and dad entered the room, and his mom knelt down next to Gregor as he began to cry. After collecting himself, Gregor tells them that he will get ready and go to work. He explains that he needs to work to make a living. He is too far in debt to skip his job. In his explanation, he says that this will stop everyone at work from treating him poorly, knowing he’s diligent and persevering. He doesn’t want to fit the negative reputation traveling salesmen have. At this, the chief clerk made his way out of the room. Gregor knew he couldn’t let the clerk leave in this state. As Gregor looks far into the future and not just the present, he knew he couldn’t let the clerk be angry with him. He wished his sister was there since she was very persuading. Gregor knew that this task was in his hands and got up to go talk to the chief clerk. He was able to use his legs successfully and assumed this meant his day was turning around. Gregor’s mother quickly jumped to her feet and yelled out a plea of help. Without realizing it, she had knocked over a coffee pot on the carpet. She got up and ran to her husband. Gregor quickly ran to the chief clerk, but he continued avoiding
