FLORENCE— An inside look at the journey of adjustment for an individual who has traveled halfway across the globe to begin a year in the life as a foreign exchange student in Florence, Montana. The Florence Chronicle sat down with the foreign exchange student, Cheyenne Bauge, who has left her home in Saumur, France for the experience of a lifetime here in the United States. Cheyenne gave us insight on what she has encountered so far, and what she hopes to find during her time here.
What is one part of American culture that you are excited to experience?
France doesn’t always celebrate the same holidays as the United States. I’m excited to experience certain holidays, such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, for the first time.
What are some things you would like to do while here in the United States?
…show more content…
Aside from that, I would love to visit Yellowstone National Park and view all the beautiful landscape Montana has to offer.
What is one part of French culture that you would like to share with Americans?
Definitely traditional French recipes. I have already baked a few desserts that my host family loved.
What is one difference between education in France and education in America?
One major difference is that in France, you can’t drive until your eighteen. In Montana, you can begin driving at the age of fourteen. Instead of driving places during lunch, we usually just walk to restaurants. From trying her first Thanksgiving turkey, to witnessing the awe-inspiring scene that Montana withholds, we here at the Florence Chronicle think it’s safe to say that Cheyenne Bauge is in for an unforgettable

Following the Seven Years’ War, France lost its political standing in Europe, as its independence, security, and power were threatened daily. The idea of an American victory over the British greatly appealed the French, as it proffered an invaluable chance to the French to regain their status and to weaken England in one blow. Yet the French did not wish to support a mercurial and unstable cause, and the Americans did not desire a loss of their unique neutrality, and on these terms the French set out to assist the Americans politically, economically, and in war. As early as 1775 with the establishment of the Hortalez Company France began to covertly supply necessities to the Americans, such as artillery, arms, ammunition, linens, clothes, and even gold.…

The French Revolution was a historic event triggered by a chain of events in France that lasted for ten years. The primary significance of it being the abolishment of absolute monarchy after the lower class fought for their rights and demanded a change in the unfair social structures that have left them in poverty and made their lives more difficult than the first two estates. Some causes of the French Revolution include social disputes between the first, second and third estate. The first estate was made up of the clergy and church workers and the second made up of the nobles, while the third estate consists of the Bourgeoisie, otherwise known as the middle class and "peasants". This was the social class that had the least amount of…

Having never left Fall River before college, I was largely unconscious of the identity of Massachusetts, and even less aware of other communities and other ways of living. It is these conversations, then, that I think are central to teaching and working with other people from different communities. It is in these conversations that I find myself working toward embracing differences, recognizing similarities, and appreciating the uniqueness of communities and individuals.…

In a time of dire change and the opportunity for revitalization, the American and French Revolution are key time periods that share very root similarities, but also branch out with individualistic differences. Both of these revolutions were rooted in subverting a monarchical government, overthrowing what each country believed to be unjust ways of ruling a nation. The American colonists found themselves deep in the British tyrannical rule, a key analogy to the weak peasants of France that were knee deep in the tyrannical rule of the French monarchy and nobleman. The two revolutions were a result of alarming economic crisis and conditions.…

Even walking out of your front door can offer a blend of credentials required to be a part of a certain culture. This city, and surrounding areas, emit vibrant displays of what makes a person unique. From festivals celebrating food, to gatherings called specifically for international cultural appreciation, it is difficult to find another place so rich in culture.…

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

Surrey International Children’s Festival, Storytelling by David Bouchard Although I had been studying French for over a decade, this was my very first French cultural event I have ever been to in the Lower Mainland. Living and studying Core French in BC did not give me much exposure to French Culture. Unless I intentionally choose to listen to FM 97.7, La Radio-Canada, the only French station in BC, I perceived difficulties in finding the French and Francophile community in Vancouver. However, when I was young, I have lived in Montreal for about two and half years and I had a privilege of being exposed to French cultural events such as the Du Maurier Festival de Jazz in Montreal and a day trip to La Cabane a Sucre in Mont-Saint-Gregoire.…

A person may spend their lifetime never once meeting someone who sees blue the same way they see blue. This is a usual result since everyone has individual life experiences that influence them differently. Especially for Edita Rexha, blue-eyed, with curly, slightly untamed brown hair, whose vision of life contrasts fundamentally with an average young, seventeen-year-old women living in the United States. Born in Prishtina, Kosovo, senior Edita encapsulates a story of struggle, strength and success. When only a month old, her family was forced to flee their home countries because of a violent war in Serbia.…

Going to a country that is nothing like you own is a difficult task. Trying to live there is even harder as nobody acts, does or has the same morals as you did back in your home country. Throughout this novel, most of the characters that move to a new country change themselves in order for them to succeed or fit in. They change so much about themselves, even things that they don’t notice, that when they go back home they stand out just as much,”She’ll come back and be a serious Americanah”.…

The gaming community is a culture of its own and it differs greatly depending on where you are in the world. In comparison to America, South Korea’s gaming community seems far more intense in terms of its popularity nationwide. My goal is to discover the factors that contribute to the differences in importance and popularity of video games. I will tackle this by analyzing Korea through Marvin Harris’ theory of cultural materialism to determine how technological and economic components at the base affect the ideals of the country. This will be followed by a comparison of the gaming culture of America and Korea using the theory of cultural relativism to note the differences in a minimally biased way.…

Sacrifice VS. Superiority As the author of Finding the “Ideal Diet” Deborah Neill asserted, “(food) symbolizes culture, social status and power … it also could reaffirm cultural and social prejudices” (Neill 2009, 23). In hindsight, diet and nutrition played a critical role in the empire building of many countries, and Japan and France are not exceptions. While a bunch of parallel can be drawn between the French and Japanese colonialism in terms of colonial foodways, the measurements adopted by Japan and France in colonial dietary practices were not on par with each other.…
