Fractional Distillation Lab

In this experiment fractional distillation was used to separate a 1:1 mixture of Ethyl acetate and Butyl acetate. Fractional distillation is a method used to separate mixtures of compounds that have boiling points. Gas chromatography, (a common type of chromatography used in analytical chemistry for separating compounds) was used to determine if the separation of the two components were successfully separated. The separation is based on the differences in the boiling points of the liquids in the mixture, Ethyl acetate Butyl acetate. This type of distillation can be considered a series of simple distillations in which the vaporization and condensation occurs in a single distillation column. Equilibrium between the liquid and vapor phases has

In the Acid-Catalyzed Hydration of norbornene, water and sulfuric acid were added to the C=C double bond to form norborneol. Sulfuric acid acted as a catalyst, where it was not consumed in the reaction and helped to propel the reaction forward, as it was vital in forming hydronium ion and breaking the double bond. Both the products endo-norborneol and exo-norborneol were synthesized; however regioselectivity and stereoselectivity played a role as to which product was more preferred and whether the equatorial or axial orientation of the hydroxy group was favored. The setup of the Cold-Finger, and the ability of norborneol to sublime readily allowed for the purification of the crude product to obtain the diastereomeric products exo- and endo-norborneol.…

    Mystery Liquids Lab

In this lab we wanted to identify what the four mystery liquids were using density and their characteristic properties. We were initially given four liquids that were labelled numbers 1- 4, some graduated cylinders, and a scale, but we also knew that the 4 liquids were ethanol, vegetable oil, water, and cyclohexane. Using the mass that we found when we measured the liquid and using only 10 mL of the liquids we were able to calculate the density and easily identify the liquids and see if they matched the guesses we had made initially. Our results do confirm our hypothesis that you could identify liquids if you have their densities.…

The flask was attached to a reflux condenser and the mixture was reflux for 45 minutes, during which butadiene sulfone was decomposed. The mixture was allowed to cool and then transfer to another 100 mL beak, with the addition of 10 mL of tetrahydrofuran. A small amount of charcoal was added to the solution, mixed, and vacuum filter. Hexanes (50 mL) were added to the filtrate, cooled in an ice bath, and vacuum filtrate once more. The objective of this investigation was to separate a dry mixture based on its physical properties. The iron was separated using a magnet and the salt was removed because it was soluble in water, while the remaining sand was not. The mixture in its tray weighed 51.61 grams. The container weighed 2.51 grams, so the mixture alone weighed 49.10 grams. Running a magnet over the mixture successfully removed the iron.…

Truc-Nhi Do Separation of a Mixture The purpose of this lab was to separate a mixture, calculate the percent composition by mass, and find percent error. I first started out by taking the mass of each component of the lab. I used the infiltration method to allow the salt and water solution, a blended mixture, to pass through the filtration paper and into the beaker. A trick to know if something is a solution is to see is it has the aqueous sign (aq) in the formula, like NaCl(aq).…

Fractional distillation is a common method for separating components of a mixture by utilizing their boiling points to aid in the separation. As a mixture is heated, the component with the lower boiling point in the mixture vaporize, while the higher boiling point component will remain in solution. These vapors will rise to a cooler area where they will condense and this liquid will then be collected; this is known as the distillate. Eventually, the lower boiling component will boil off, and the higher boiling point component will begin to travel up into the condenser as the temperature reaches the boiling point of the second component. As the second distillate is collected, it will mostly contain the higher-boiling component.…

Additionally, the distillate would still contain a mixture of the volatile components, rather than one pure component. In order to separate the volatile components with similar boiling points, multiple simple distillations would have to be performed on the first fraction of distillate obtained, each one producing a more pure sample of the more volatile component. Because this method is inefficient and yields a very low volume of the target solvent, fractional distillation is instead used to separate a mixture of volatile solvents with similar boiling points. Fractional distillation is a method of separation similar to simple distillation, in that volatile components of a solution are separated based on boiling point. The addition of an insulated column to the distillation apparatus in fraction…

Results/Discussion: 2-butanol and Acetic Acid were refluxed together with anti-bumping granules and a catalyst of sulphuric acid for 1 hour and five minutes. Anti-bumping granules are small ceramic granules which have rough edges. They are added within a mixture to encourage smooth boiling. In this experiment by adding the anti-bumping granules we were able to achieve smooth boiling throughout both the reflux process and the distillation process. Without adding these granules, bubbles of vapour may be difficult to form due to both process being conducted in a very clean, smooth glassware.…

Based on the theory of free volume, penetrant molecules can diffuse from one place to another if there is a blank space or a free volume sufficient (Mulder, 1991). The movement of heat will produce a magnification of free volume in the membrane. Therefore, the rate of diffusion of each molecule penetrant increased at high temperatures and produce high permeation flux values anyway (Bakhsi et al., 2006). Figure 4.9. Simple Distillation Essay

Distillation, described from About Education, is the process of separating liquids with 2 different boiling points. Distillating requires heating and cooling of liquid components to eventually purify the mixtures. In distillation, heat is added to vaporize the liquid with the lower boiling point and this vapor gas bubble is condensed back into its liquid form, where it is then collected in a receiving flask or a graduated cylinder. Multiple distillations and collections, depending on the types of distillation techniques, yields distinct, separated liquids.…
