Each day in the United States, 4 children die from child abuse. Child abuse is a very severe and serious issue in our world. When people think of the topic child abuse, they automatically think of a child being beat. What doesn’t cross most people’s mind, or most people may not even know of is that there is much more to child abuse than just physical harm. Child abuse is “non-accidental commission of any act by a caretaker upon a child under the age of 18” says David F. Capeless in “What Is Child Abuse?” It is simply an act of domestic violence towards a child. This showing that any harmful act towards a child such as beating, torturing, starving, deprival of essential needs, meaning not allowing your child to bathe, eat, sleep, change clothing, are all acts of physical abuse. Any physical abuse can lead to head trauma, damage to a child’s growing brain, broken bones, ability to cope and thrive in their adult life’s, or even hospitalization and death. This is the most common type of abuse. Most parents neglect their children because of a substance or particle. Parents addicted to drugs or alcohol tend to neglect their children because of the substance preventing them from noticing their children. Depression I also a big reason why parents neglect their children. Depression can make a parent unaware of their surroundings or people around them.
