Behavioral Theories
The behavioral theory focuses on the behaviors of the leaders. From this theory’s standpoint, “leaders are made not born”. Leaders demonstrate two categories of behaviors: task-oriented and people-oriented (page 271). The task-oriented leaders engage in increasing the performance of its subordinates, providing instructions and guidelines, and delegating tasks. The main objective of the task-oriented leader is to meet the organization’s goals. Therefore, a task-oriented leader would show high productivity levels. On the other hand, the people-oriented leader behaviors refer to leaders who show relatedness to employee’s feelings and emotions and care about their well-being (page 271). When leaders show more empathy towards its subordinates, there is more employee satisfaction, positive reaction, and fewer turnovers. …show more content…
I like to be productive and meet the deadlines. For me, it is important to attain the organization’s objectives in order to feel competent. I also care about other people’s feeling and emotions, but I would not spend time empathizing with them on their sorrows or personal problems. Over the years I have learned that most people fake their emotion in order to manipulate and take advantage of the kindhearted fellow.
The behavioral approach to leadership neglects the environment in which behaviors are demonstrated. Thus, this model is not effective because it doesn’t specify the conditions on which this behavioral approach can be applied.
