Fortunato's Monologue

It’s been weeks since I’ve seen my husband, Fortunato, and I begin to worry. The town’s people have begun to fabricate lies saying, I, the loving devoted wife, had something to do with his disappearance. Not being able to leave my own home without the gaze of condemnatory strangers and loved ones. I order my butler to send word to Agustino, that I need to see him without delay. “Mr. Smith, bring a pen and paper to me right away” with a quick reply “right away ma’am” Mr. Smith moves without hesitation. As I write, I feel Mr. Smith hovering over me, watching every stroke I make on the paper “Is there something I can help you with?”
“No ma’am” he says as he’s turning to walk away. Just then I notice him still in the room, gawking at me “can I

Where are you, what is it that you needed me so urgently?” He ran through door to door on the bottom level of the house. I slipped on a rod and slowly walked out my bedroom door “Is it so necessary to disturb the peace and quiet of my home” I snap back while shuffling to the balcony of the second story home.

“Oh stop I’m not your queen, no need to

His wife has come to my home with questions, questions I didn’t prepare for.
“Agustino said he seen you and my husband leave together on the night of the carnival?” she looked me in my eyes as she asked, waiting for me to make a mistake, waiting for me to make a face impression that would indicate me about to lie.
“Agustino told you this? Well I can ensure you he must be mistaken, I never went to the carnival I was much too sick from the stomach bug to even leave my bed.”
“But he said he saw you…”
“Look Angela,” I said in a soft low voice while moving closer to her wrapping my arms around her to comfort her “I know you’re devastated by his disappearance, are you sure you haven’t misinterpret what Agustino could have

Emigration has defined the culture of the United States of America since its very conception, when people started to trickle in from Britain and other European countries. However, a seniority complex, a hierarchy based on the amount of time a family has been in the country as compared to another, has defined American culture as well. Aleida Rodriguez experienced this tendency firsthand, and in her excerpt from “My Mother in Two Photographs Among Other Things,” she describes the painful and insurmountable cultural rifts that devalue the emigrant’s ultimate sacrifice of familiar…

I think the narrator is obviously insane, and should not be trusted to be giving any account in a reliably sane depiction of events. He, I assume the speaker is a man given the time portrayed in the text and circumstances that are represented, can be relied on to depicted the situations from his own warped reality. It is as if we are privy to the confession of a man who has committed what he feels is a justifiable act. I think the narrator is defiantly hiding the truth from Fortunato, but I don’t think the narrator is manipulating the truth to the listener. He feels that Fortunato has wronged him and his action is completely just.…
