Here is where readers see the depiction of the professor and understand him to be Holmes’s final match. The consequence of this index for the narrative is that he must be put behind bars, locked up, or sent away for good in some way. He is portrayed to be a very dangerous man, and one to be very close to killing Holmes. The two men, both with high intelligence see each other as a threat to their life and society. Therefore for Holmes chooses the professor to be his final match. If Holmes is able to take down the professor, it is his Grammy. It proves his intelligence in success throughout the course of his life solving mystery crimes. The description of Professor Moriarty is also an external anachronism. This is noteworthy because Watson narrates that Holmes arrives at his home going through a series of horrendous events. This true index also hints that there is a consequence for Holmes in the narrative, if readers did not already know that this was the last adventure of Holmes. The fact that Holmes will not and is not going to stop until he has Professor Moriarty put away for good is a strong indication that he will go to any lengths to succeed. Holmes seems to put out a very tough exterior, but for anyone whose life is at stake, it is something to fear of even for Holmes. The Final Problem can even act be a depiction of Holmes breaking down little bit by little bit.
