Forest Winter is set near the surroundings of the quiet valley which the Nilsams live in. The winter has a big effect on the valley, as many people leave for winter and come back summertime. The surroundings of the valley consist of trees which are either cut down or still in the forest as the area used to be a logging town. The house which the Nilsam’s live in is made out of wood just like the other houses in the valley.
Unlike Forest Winter, Gravity is set in the city during the summer. On the day of which the story occurred, the sun was out yet there was still a breeze which could be felt. The party seemed to have a gloomy mood from the perspective of Rachel and Jerra who were the hosts, although to the others it seemed as if it was alive with lights and smoke seen and smelt. The day was felt with sadness by Jerra as it was the day his father died, but the next day were to be a much happier and brighter day for him.

In Forest Winter, Winton goes into great detail to describe the land and climate of the valley. He also uses very miserable language to detail the past experiences of the Nilsams, especially Jerra, who is the one who the story is built around. Words such as catatonic, misery and despair accurately sum up what Winton was indicating with Jerra.
In Gravity, Winton uses a wider range of comparisons to express Jerra’s sadness throughout the day of the party. Winton expresses this sadness through comparing Jerra’s feelings to ‘the ghostly sensations associated with amputees.’ He also recalls on a past event to show this sadness, which was the story of how Jerra first rode a bike with the help of his dad, and how Jerra had come to the realization that these experiences which he remembered in positive ways prior to his father’s death now would bring a gloom upon
