Detectives have many different things to do at a crime scene: collecting information, measuring distances, analyzing data… Therefore math is really important. Mathematicians can store and interpret data by using probability, statistics, cryptography and wavelet. A wavelet is a mathematical function which is used in digital signal processing and image compression. One of the basic wavelet formulas (not the only one!) is:

Trigonometry is otherwise know as the study of relationships between lengths and angles of triangles. Forensic scientists use that part of math in connection with murders; especially blood.
By construction right triangles between the wound of the victim (where the blood comes from) and the blood splatters.
In most crime scenes knowledge about things like:
- Where did the murderer stand?
- Where was the victim located?
- In which angle did the murder weapon (e. g. dagger) hit the victim?
These are a deciding factor. With trigonometry you are able to calculate trajectory of blood splatters or for example the trajectory of bullets.
Right angle trigonometry consists basically of the following three …show more content…
With all the given information you can solve for the missing parts (in this case a and c) by using the formulas of the right triangle trigonometry.
Say you want to solve for the variable b first: b is opposite of the 30° angle. Other than that, you have also given the adjacent side which equals 8 feet. That means you should set up an equation using tangent (tangent = opposite leg/adjacent leg) The equation would look like that: tan(30°) = b/8
0.5774 = b/8
0.5774/1 = b/8 b = 8(0.5774) b = 4.6188
So you found out that length b measures about 4.6 ft.
Now you do basically the exact same thing to solve for c.
C is the hypotenuse and the given side is still the adjacent leg of angle 30° (you could also use the side b to solve the equation by using the sine formula)
You would use the formula for cosine which is cosine = adjacent leg/hypotenuse. The equation would
