The well-known Great Wall and the Ming Tombs are a fascinating way to learn more of China’s history. The 1,500 mile Great Wall took thousands of years and many generations to build. Built as a barrier, the wall protected the emperor’s kingdom from the invading Huns. The emperor used farm labor to build the wall varying the height and width with the terrain. If a worker died, his body was left to become interred as part of the wall (Chai and Chai 139). Another astonishing site to see is the Ming Tombs. You might ask, “Why would I want to go see tombs of people?” The Ming Tombs have sculptures created hundreds of years ago, including life-sized animals and guards. Constructed to hold everything the emperor would need in his afterlife, the tombs contained over 3,000 relics, including the emperor’s crown (“Thirteen Ming Tombs”).
