Known as the May 4th movement, a powerful movement involving thousands of students from Peking University who protested on behalf of the country’s outrage that their claims had not been honored under the Treaty of Versailles to gain back their land that had been taken from them by Germany. In the treaty this land had been granted to Japan, in exchange for financial assistance to Germany. This movement brought on more education and literacy to the Chinese culture, and as a result a new tutor, Reginald Johnston, is appointed to oversee Pu Yi’s learning, which is vastly behind as he learns that Pu Yi is an ignorant and arrogant young adult. A wife is appointed to Pu Yi named Wan Jung. A few years later in 1924, the couple is forcibly removed from the Forbidden City, and they are relocated to a home in the Japanese Embassy. Pu Yi and Wan Jung decide to adopt Henry and Elizabeth as their new western names, as they decide to move somewhere outside of the country. Elizabeth has acquired an opium addiction from her new friend Eastern Jewel. During this time, Pu Yi is attempting to regain a throne, something which he believes to be his right, and is successful in 1934 as he is promoted after two years as Head of State in Japan to Emperor of Manchukuo.
