Foot Health Personal Statement

Although I started pursuing a career as a Foot Health Professional at the age of nineteen (19), I knew without a doubt in my mind that I wanted to further my knowledge and career in the field of Podiatry. Becoming a podiatrist is an opportunity that not only adds a new scope of treatment for patients in my country Grenada but also to establish Podiatry into a field of specialty. The alarming rate of amputations occurring amongst high risk patients resulting from poor treatment and lack of proper education in foot health is a testimony to need for such a specialty here at home.
Interestingly, the death of my paternal grandmother, which resulted from diabetes related complications, was the source of my inspiration to pursue a career in Podiatry. Before her death, she was diagnosed with gangrene, which led to a double amputation of her lower limbs. This left her depressed. Knowing that the amputation could have been avoided if the necessary treatment was provided drove me to enter the field of foot health. After observing daily procedures at the clinic, I noticed the number of high risk patients that were treated daily for poor foot care, diabetic wounds and poor circulation. The fear of losing a foot or both feet seemed to be a popular sentiment among the patients I treated. This experience only concretised my desire to pursue a career in foot health, which is a scope of medicine that is currently being overlooked in the Caribbean. If given the opportunity to pursue my studies in the field of foot health, I shall be in a position to abate or erode the fearful sentiment of foot amputation among high risk patient through my practice as a podiatrist; heavy emphasis will be placed on proper foot care and preventative
