An important part of food is the implement used with which people eat. In modern day United States, the most common utensils regarding foodstuffs are forks, knives, and spoons. Forks have the longest, most adaptive past, changing from a simple prong or stick to the multi-pronged silverware currently in use. Forks are commonly used to transport food from the plate to the mouth, as well as hold substances still while being cut. In Rome, devices people now call “dinner-spikes” were used as the primeval forerunner to the modern fork. The spikes were used to serve food by impaling the morsels, and for transport of foods between plates or from plate to knife. The use of knives for eating as well as for hunting or killing was an idea mainly spread by the Romans when it concerned Europe. Both edges of knives were sharpened but this later evolved to only one edge being sharp so that people would not injure themselves when eating food balanced on the blade of the knife. It was only fairly recent at all that people in the United States stopped using knives for food transportation. Now the use of knives as they once were is seen as immature and rude to most people residing in the states, though knives are still used for carving and cutting almost all food types. Spoons are another matter altogether. While the very first spoons were, much like forks, one’s hands, over time spoons matured into items constructed of shells, horn, wood, and various metals. It was typical for there to be common spoons as well as personal spoons, the spoons would be used to give everyone serving a helping of whatever the meal consisted of, and wiped with napkins in-between. They were and are a common utensil as they are versatile and able to be used no matter what
