There are many definitions of food security but the one that is most frequently quoted is that of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which describes food security as “When all people, always, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life” [1]
Caledon is well reported to have malnutritional problems this is due to poverty, low income and spending their money on alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. [2] Causing the people of Caledon to only afford basic non-nutritional foods. Caledon has bad access to good food and good access to bad food. Diabetes is prevalent due to the unhealthy food being affordable. The lack of wealth and education is the leading cause why people who have been diagnosed with a lifestyle disease like diabetes to not make a change in their lifestyles or habits [3]. Some children do bring lunch to school, but most schools and creches in the Caledon area do have feeding schemes which aid in providing food for the learners.
