Has the long list of ingredients on the back of potato chips, sodas, or snacks? Most of the ingredients will list additives, any substance added to food that improves that food product’s consistency or freshness. Today in the articles Pros and Cons of Food Additives by Sheila Globus and the text Food Additives: Are They Safe? by David Feder debates the supporting or opposing side of keeping them in our foods. But of course, food additives have many harmful possibilities but may also seem beneficial to those in favor of. Because of more additives having cons then pros, food additives in food products justify that they need to be avoided for caution of the unsure effects they may have on people’s bodies.

Shall people place an unknown chemical into their bodies to only later find out it was because of the FDA’s attending knowledge? Well, if people deny this question their answer may lead to how additives increase risk of life-threatening diseases such as cancer. To support, the article Pros and Cons of Food Additives presents “that BHT and BHA may increase the risk of cancer,” likewise, “artificial sweeteners have been linked to cancer in animals,” (Globus Lines 5-6). More proof, Feder’s article asserts the problem once again that, “it’s hard to find an additive that has not been investigated as a potential carcinogens, substances that can cause cancer” (Feder Lines 23-24). This evidence cautions the readers to avoid these products because of cancer’s threat it has on animals, exposed to the deadly disease just as much to humans. It’s time to ask, is a pack of marshmallows fully worth a later life of terminal cancer? Or is it worth brutal side effects later that some additives cause? As a result, additives cause individual side effects without people being aware. Together, the articles help to prove that with evidence of “significant reductions in hyperactive behavior in children during the withdrawal phase” of an already-approved FDA food product containing
