Before you begin chewing out your patient for not flossing, break the ice by conversing about the weather, their family, the news, etc. Once you have broken the ice begin to talk to them about their brushing and flossing routines. Communicate to the patient that it is easy to prevent plaque buildup with proper care. Effective removal of plaque within the oral cavity is not achieved by simply brushing. Plaque control and removal is attained with precise tooth brushing and use of interdental aids such as dental floss and interdental brushes. It is very crucial to brush your teeth after each meal, or minimally at least twice a day. After you brush you should floss right after. Floss is a thin nylon filament, and can help evacuate food particles and plaque from in between the teeth. You should floss after every time you brush your teeth. If the patient does not like flossing try introducing interdental brushes to them. Interdental brushes serve as a great alternative for flossing.
