Flooding in Howard County has been an ongoing issue. Due to flooding, the county sees issues such as pollution and property damage that endanger the lives of people. And there are many reasons why floods have been a major issue. One can point to the failure of dams in the city. Another reason is due to riverine flooding. A combination of the failure of dams, river flooding, and many flood plains are why floods are a hazard in Howard County and can endanger the lives of people and property.
The flood problems in Howard County have been continuing on for decades. Back in the 1970s, storms like Hurricane Floyd and tropical storm Agnes cause massive flooding in the area (Chesapeake bay foundation). To pile on that, snowstorms have also caused flooding to occur. When the snow melts, there is a lot of water, which moves and floods the area. According to the National Climate Data Center, there have been a total of 39 floods since 1996, each of which has caused problems.
Flooding occurs in many places in the country and around the world. But how it’s dealt with in that area or how it’s controlled, can have an effect on the severity of the flood. One reason why floods are a problem in Howard County is because of the distribution of rivers.

According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation “polluted runoff is a major source of pollution in Howard County. About one-quarter of the nitrogen pollution in county rivers comes from polluted runoff, and much of its sediment pollution” (14). Pollution runoff can be anything from hazardous chemicals to trash or dog waste. When a storm flood occurs, water runs through watersheds and picks up any types of pollution and contaminants. This is why “Storm-water runoff is one of the most significant threats to ecosystems”(14). Pollution can be harmful not only to the environment but to people as well as they may carry diseases and bad
