As Lady Gaga sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl this year, the hearts of Americans were filled with pride. The image of her laying her hand on her heart as the American flag was held behind her was patriotic and powerful. But why does this anthem have the power of bringing tears to our eyes? Why is the American flag regarded with such respect and protected? The immediate answer to these questions could be patriotism, but it is more than just that. To me, protecting the flag is more than protecting a piece of cloth. This flag carries major weight with it. It means protecting the causes for which so many people fought and died for. It means protecting the American way of life.

The lives of soldiers, law enforcement, dreamers, thinkers, innovators, and lovers. It angers me to see people disrespecting the flag because not only is that the worst sign of disrespect for American lives, it is also a sign of our government’s inability to protect the flag. When people step on those lines of red, white, and blue, they are stepping on the dreams of a soldier, the love of a mother for her deployed son, and the sweat of a father to provide for his family. It’s important to protect the flag because that means protecting our American kin who died with dreams and hopes for America’s future.
Hope for the future. Most importantly, protecting the flag means protecting the liberties that we enjoy and assuring that our children will have the fortune of enjoying those same liberties. To not live in a country in which they have no choice, where the little girls have no voice and little boys are forced to do what a dictator wants them to. In conclusion, protecting the flag means more than just protecting a piece of cloth. It means respecting our humble beginnings and our founding fathers. It also means protecting the hopes and dreams of all the people who laid their life for the red, white, and blue. For all the Americans who died with hopes for America.
