My own fitness past and future
Growing up I was an active child, well as active as a child can be. Unfortunately the older I got the active I was; instead of playing outside I would watch T.V. In primary school I didn’t participate in any sports because I was afraid of failing or make a fool of myself. It wasn’t until I got to high school that I decided that I needed to at least try, it was a fresh start and a chance for me to improve myself but I was still afraid. What I should not forget to mention is that from the age of about eleven I gained a lot of weight; in a span of 2 years I had gained about twenty kilograms. Although I didn’t mind being in the C team I realised I didn’t enjoy playing netball and decided not to play it the following year. In grade 9 I wasn’t doing any form of exercise and as a result I gained even more weight; I remember stepping on a scale for the first time in years and seeing the number 85.6. In that moment I decided to take back my life and although I didn’t play sports at school; with help from my father I found a sport that I truly enjoyed. I starting boxing in grade ten and I gained a passion for it; it completely changed my life. During the December holidays in 2013 I was doing more exercise than I had done in my life time. I was doing cardio and strength training ( those are important for boxing). At first it was incredibly difficult; because of my weight it was difficult to even walk up a flight of stairs. I was so overwhelmed by the intensity of boxing but at the same time intrigued by the challenge, the combination of strength and stamina, I wanted to be able to do that I buckled down and did what had to be done to reach that level …show more content…
In order to achieve optimum overall fitness you must include cardio in your fitness program. I believe that cardio is a vital component of any fitness program. Cardio is best for me because when I was beginning my journey with it was intimidating but by started with cardio I was able to ease into other aspects of fitness such as strength and flexibility. My first fitness program was mainly cardio which contributed greatly to my weight loss. It can be done anywhere and without equipment. Cardio exercise helps burn unwanted body fat, it not only helps with weight loss but also to gain good muscles because in order to build muscle you first need to burn the layers of fat that cover the muscles. Cardio is not only meant to improve one’s physique , it can be used to improve your health and longevity. If done effectively cardio can improve and maintain a good respiratory system the condition of your heart. Cardio strengthens the heart and helps in lowering blood pressure (Ladock 2016) . Along with a massive change of physical appearance, this journey also generated a lot of mixed responses from my family and friends.
