First Snow Leonid Afremov Analysis

First Snow by Leonid Afremov begins with a road lined with street lights on both sides. The road is very shiny looking as if it is iced over with the street lights reflecting back up into the night sky off of the road. On each side of the road there are vibrant colored trees with a layer of white covering the ground as if it was snowing. The leaves on the trees seem to meet in the middle of the road overtop of the street lights. Deeper into the painting, there are two people walking down the road with their backs turned to the viewer. It seems to be a man and a woman taking a stroll on a cold night.

Afremov is known for his use of many different colors in his paintings. In First Snow, the leaves on the trees in the picture hold various colors. Behind each street light there are many warm colors used. These colors include red, yellow, and orange. Farther away from the street lights, nearing the edges of the painting where there is not as much light, the colors start to become cool colors. These leaves are an assortment of violets and blues. Afremov used a special knife palette technique which is a bit unusual and it makes his art easy to recognize. The artist was born on July 12, 1955 in Vitebsk, Belarus. He is a Russian-Israeli modern impressionistic artist who has developed a very unusual technique and style all of his own. Afremov is also unusual in that he has achieved most of his following through the use of the Internet and eBay sales. He does not perform many gallery showings. However, his career got off to a slow start and he moved around to various places in the US and Mexico. He currently resides in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, near Cancun.
