The City of Waco Fire Department responded to the Twin Peaks incident on May 17, 2015 one of the largest loss of life incidents in the city since the 1957 Tornado. In order to decrease the loss of life from Active Shooter/Mass Casualty Incidents in the future, the fire department should institute a Mass Casualty Alarm assignment and implement the use of tourniquets as part of our medical protocols for exsanguination wounds. Mass Casualty Alarm would send an appropriate amount of first responder personnel to the scene to begin the process of triage, treatment, preparing the patients for transport. This alarm assignment would allow the personnel to responding from the first call for assistance rather than have a piece meal response as we…
Frequently when responding to an event, first responders are not there for a prolonged period of time. For example: Firefighters are usually fighting a fire for 30 minutes to an hour. However, during the event of the WTC attack, that was not the case. First responders were on-site of hours or even days, those that had PPE found that specific items were hindering them from doing their jobs. According to Jackson et al.…
Following the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11, the fire service has undergone a transformation in its response in order to avoid another disaster of this magnitude. The 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City, New York identified new building design and construction concerns due to a terror event. On September 11, 2001, two commercial aircrafts intentionally crashed into the World Trade Center twin towers igniting jet-fuel-fed fires inside the structures. Due to the intense flames impinging on the steel structure the towers collapsed. Three hundred forty-three firefighters died in the collapse.…
First Responder Injustice In the article No Firemen at Ground Zero this 9/11, author Michael Burke is livid that first responders were not invited to ground zero for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Burke, brother of a fireman that sacrificed himself helping others in the twin towers, wrote this with the intent of showing that not inviting the first responders was wrong. Instead, the firemen and other first responders were invited to a different location where they could watch on TV. This decision was made by New York City Mayor Bloomberg.…
No Room for First Responders September 11th 2001, two-thousand nine hundred and ninety six people lost their lives. Three hundred and forty three of them were firefighters. Michael Burke, a Wall Street Journalist who is a brother and a son to a firemen, is furious and offended that the families of the first responders were not invited to the 10th anniversary remembrance. By writing this, Burke’s goal is to put pressure on the New York City Mayor, Mike Bloomberg. Also, Burke wanted to leverage wealthy and influential people into doing something about the problem.…
Justify responses to a particular incident or emergency in a health or social care setting. (D2) Scenario 1: a student you do 1:1 work with is very withdrawn. She looks like she hasn’t had a bath for days, has dark bags under her eyes and bruise marks on her wrists. When abuse is suspected it is important that the individual’s health and well-being is seen as the priority. This is why the local child protection officer should be notified so that they can investigate the situation to prevent the child from harming themselves or the abuser from harming them.…
This investigation had more than 1,000 federal, state and local law enforcement working together. (Boston) The first responders were the initial response personnel. Once the blasts went off, they quickly responded to secure area. These personnel included emergency crews, hospitals personnel, and government agencies.…
“In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing” Two young psychologists, John Darley and Bibb Latane, put together two well thought out experiments to rationalize the response time of individuals in groups. After reading about the brutal attack of Catherine Genovese in New York in 1964, which ultimately lead to her death, the two men were on a mission to figure out why nobody helped. Even with the witnesses being awakened by her screams, they chose to do nothing about it until it was too late. After Darley and Latane had the results from the experiments, they established five simple steps that would, hopefully, encourage others to help another when needed. Many people feel it isn’t their responsibility to help someone who is in dire need.…
The idea of a narrative is to tell a story, the events occurring on the day of September 11, 2001 will provide an opportunity to relay my feelings, moving beyond the initial pure and basic anger at those responsible for such a desperate act. The image shows two emergency responders in the cloud of debris left by the collapse of the Trade Centers and what drew me to this picture is what they must have been talking about. The questions and issues I initially considered included: the loss of life; the tremendous devastation; and are there more survivors, where these possibilities could only be confirmed by talking to the individuals in the picture. Instead, I decided that the picture will be used as a metaphor to relay my awareness of the incident,…
Yet in those examples, the soldiers and responders continued with their duty. Law enforcement officers must understand that they will have the same flight response, but they also have to fight as…
When I got to the scene, I realized that my responsibility was magnitudes higher than what I had thought beforehand. Before me lay a seven year old boy, with no pulse or breathing. My fellow lifeguards immediately went into action, starting CPR. Meanwhile, I ran to call 911 with the information I had quickly gathered at the scene. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, I managed to flag down a passing police vehicle and led him to the victim.…
Being an emergency dispatcher is not an easy task. People mistake the job of an emergency dispatcher to be easy since their primary responsibility is to answer phone calls. However, it is forgotten that these calls pertain to traumatic situations in which the dispatcher must remain calm for the sake of the caller. Despite the training dispatchers receive to remain calm, collected, and professional during all aspects of any call, they are not truly prepared to handle the stress that accompanies this service job. Stress overcomes a dispatcher even before they answer a phone call.…
The planning of and emergency response to a terror attack has always been a great concern. The main focus has always been on those of overt attack. These attacks are those by chemical, biological, or radiological/nuclear weapons. These type of attacks cause an immediate response from police, fire, and Emergency Medical Services personnel CDC Strategic Planning Workgroup, 2000; Forest& Howard, 2013). In any attack it is the state and the local government that will have the responsibility for the management and planning of responses to these attacks.…
When someone dials 911, they expect someone to be there to help them. Whether they just had a slight fall, or are suffering from Cardiac Arrest, first responders need to be there for the citizens they serve. If a first responder is injured and cannot do their job properly, then they are putting the safety of the citizens at risk. The job of a first responder is to be there for the citizens, which is why workplace safety is always important to keep in mind. In the Fire and Emergency Services occupations, there are three common injuries; Sprains and strains, Smoke inhalation and broken bones.…
Crisis theory is an important analytical tool for social workers to use when working with emergency first responders dealing with mental health issues following a critical incident. Those in the emergency response profession are unlikely to describe their job as mundane. Daily, adrenaline pumps through their systems as they respond to the worst events, people will face in their lifetime. As a defense mechanism, first responders are able to operate in their logical minds, build up a resilience, and keep themselves separate from the travesties they witness.…
