I am a woman. I am a firefighter. Oftentimes it feels like those two statements were never meant to be said together, but I say them proudly. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to smile politely or laugh awkwardly when a stranger hurled a cliché in my direction, I’d be quite wealthy. It’s not easy being a firefighter.…
In 1736 the first real volunteer department known as the union fire company was started in Philadelphia by Ben Franklin. The Union fire company was made up of all volunteers that would make a line from the closet water source and pass the buckets to the fire. There were many other fire brigades that were clubs or co-ops which only intended to fight each other’s fires that were in the group. Ben Franklin’s concept was to help everyone and their property from burning. During their spare time they met monthly to discuss new tactics on how to fight the fires and train.…
Yesterday evening, Beatty, the chief fireman of the city of Fahrenheit, was murdered by a fellow co-worker. The murder took place at the home address of a fireman named Guy Montag. The event occurred while the house of the said fireman was being burnt because he failed to comply with the laws.…
Los Angeles Fire Department For my research I chose the Los Angeles Fire Department. Their Mission statement is “to preserve life and property, promote public safety and foster economic growth through leadership, management and actions, as an all risk life safety response provider.” I found it important to note that LA city is the biggest in size and second most populated city in the United States, so they have a very big and important mission. History-…
It was while pushing himself up that Sullivan first saw the fire- “A signal tongue of flame shooting out the side of the O’Learys’ Barn. Sullivan didn’t hesitate a second. “FIRE! FIRE!…
Which made his stomach turn, the sight of buildings destroyed and seeing burnt or dead corpses made him want to hurl. The smell of it was awful as well the smell of burnt rubber, bodies, and gunpowder was still present within the atmosphere. One shop that caught his eye was a toyshop. He peered inside the building, there were many toys scattered the floor. One toy caught his eye, resembled a soldier, an American soldier.…
Fire has been the foundation in the progress of humanity. It cooks food, warms homes, and fuels machines, but its ruthless flames can also destroy lives. In the memoir The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls’ father teaches her the wonders of the world and takes her on adventures, but he also is one of the biggest dangers to her and her family. These opposing traits of her father as both the foundation in her knowledge and the destruction of her hope are expressed through the symbol of fire. Fire has become a treasure for mankind like Jeannette Walls’ dad is an essential part of her childhood.…
You know a man to be rather interesting when the first thing someone tells you about them is their incredibly peculiar disappearance. Ambrose Bierce disappeared somewhere into Mexico after December 26, 1913, the date found on what is presumed to be his last letter. Carlos Fuentes, famous contemporary writer of Mexico, swears that you can still hear stories of some old foreigner wandering the Mexican landscape. This, paired with Bierce’s own impressive works and history, inspired writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, and of course, Fuentes himself. This is what I believe to lie at the core of Chickamauga; that which we pass on to the next generation.…
The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…
Candidate Montoya took a few seconds to formulate his plan before briefing his fire team. SNC issued a thorough five paragraph order, but failed to address the Command and Signal paragraph. Although this portion was missed, the team understood the order and what the plan of execution. SNC did not post security throughout the entire evolution displaying an inconsistency in maintaining a tactical mindset. Additionally, as the team began to execute the obstacle, SNC directed the team pass their weapons off, thus adding to the perspective that SNC lacked a tactical sense of awareness.…
Something was being burned there. A truck drew close and unloaded its hold: small children. Babies! Yes, I did see this, with my own eyes… children thrown into the flames. (Is it any wonder that ever since then, sleep tends to elude me?)”…
The Demonata Lord Loss By. Darren Shan SPOILERS I am reading the horror story, The Demonata Lord Loss by Darren Shan. It's a very interesting story about a boy and his family moving into a new house.…
Burning Man “Wash away all the sins and bury them with the lost souls.” said James’ father, who was reading an excerpt from his daily prayer book. All we wanted was a better life, a life where we could be free from the oligarchic oppression of our government. The family boards up their house every evening; afraid of the onslaught of violent protest that wreak havoc in the lower city districts. James is the youngest in the family.…
Particularly in the Road, where all moral and cultural institutions known to humankind have been extinguished, religion and the belief in supernatural beings are at the forefront of the father’s thinking. In a world where humanity and kindness are mostly extinct, it is evident that the father adheres to the thought there might be a God-like figure. Religious and spiritual terms are often used throughout the novel, although the man often doubts the existence of a God and repeatedly curses him: He started down the rough wooden steps. […] Coldness and damp.…
Experience the Flames Family, what is a family exactly? A family is a group of people who are there for each other through each other`s ups and down helps one another strive to be the best they can possibly be. The brotherhood between firefighters is insane they want the best for one another, they want to achieve greatness together. Being a firemen is a very different career than other professions going into the station there is no way of knowing what kind of calls are going to happen that way. Firemen are ready for anything at any time of any day.…
