I am lucky that I have a happy family during my childhood until now, but it does not mean I cannot understand Enrique’s feeling. He desired his mother’s love over everything, even a death. That strong desire motivated him to do anything to meet his mother again. Enrique makes me miss my mom so bad. I am an international student, and I have lived away from home for two years, so I know very clearly what homesick is. If I was him, instead of complaining, I would change my attitude. I remember a quotation of Lou Holtz which is “Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond it”. Everybody can choose either love or hatred, happiness or sadness, hope or giving up. This does not only happen to Enrique, it also happened to a lot of people nowadays, included me. I sometimes do not live in the present, I follow what I do not have. Nevertheless, life is very equal. At the time I have some things, I also lost some things else. The main theme in this book is the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child. Although Enrique barely has memories of his mom and has only talked to her on the phone a handful of times in the past ten years of his life he still feels the need to be with her. The passage that I pulled from the book as the most important and meaningful is a short dialogue between Enrique and his mom. At this point in the book Enrique has just crossed the border into America and the smugglers that got him there called his mom and said that they need more money.…

There isn’t and will never be an exact number on how many people cross the border each day, however, it is estimated that a million people cross it on a daily basis. And a percentage of those individuals who cross the border are mothers; mothers who leave their children behind in hopes to providing more for their children while seeking work in the United States. In Enrique’s Journey, by Sonia Nazario, it demonstrates the physical, mental, and harsh conditions a single Central American mother, Lourdes, encounters on her journey to the United States.
