By twentieth century, playground were increasingly outfitted with industrial products. Manufactured steel slides, swings, seesaws, and jungle gyms were anchored in threadbare turf and later in asphalt. Sometimes a covering of thin rubber tiles softened the surface immediately underneath the structures. However, severe injuries occurred with disturbing frequency when children fell from a height onto a hard surface or otherwise suffered the consequences of poorly designed and maintained equipment.
