Fieldwork Observation

I have learned so much from my fieldwork observations. I have been able to see a second grade and pre-k class and see the difference between curriculums and schedules. Something that has surprised me while observing was noticing how some parents do not help their children with homework assignments which is unfortunate. To add, I learned approaches that the cooperating teacher made for students that did not complete work, assignments, or misbehaved in class. Hearing the students’ excitement when I show up to fieldwork and hear some of the student responses to questions are two of the things that I love most while observing. One of my challenges during observation has been not to being able to see all subjects.

Field Experience at Wildwood and Ernest Manning My cohort of ten was assigned to visit two schools over a two-week period with a full week dedicated to each location. The two schools were Wildwood elementary and Ernest Manning high school and while their relative closeness to one another would suggest that some Wildwood students may eventually be at Ernest Manning, they are opposites in terms of their status, how they carry themselves, and what they believe to be most important for students. Wildwood elementary is an old school as observed from its small and outdated architecture. Classes are small and at times claustrophobic, especially when packed with 20-25 of the nearly 600 students making it difficult if not impossible to navigate the…

Performing ethnographic fieldwork can be challenging, especially when it comes to building rapport with your subjects. Often times the subjects of the research may feel intimidated, judged or like they won’t be understood when being interviewed. In order to get the best results from their research, fieldworkers need to make sure their subjects feel comfortable in sharing all aspects of their life in regards to what they are studying. Anne Fadiman and Joshua Reno both work to build relationships with the people they study through participant observation to gain trust and get an inside look into their social and cultural worlds.…

During the Georgia Bureau of Investigation field trip, our class was given the opportunity to experience what a day is like for a professional in the crime lab. That included the very ins and outs (no pun intended) of an autopsy. An autopsy is a surgical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of a corpse to determine the cause and manner of death and to evaluate any disease or injury that may be present, usually performed by a pathologist. As a class we learned many things by observing several autopsy procedures.…

Anthropologists do not just study a group people, going to great lengths to become included in that group’s society and culture, to simply tell an immensely detailed story with the world. But rather, through their ethnographic fieldwork, anthropologists employ a methodology while studying a particular group of people, gathering as much detail and evidence as humanly possible of their experiences, then move on to interpret their work and make claims about that people’s way of life; to make meaning of the social experiences and of the lives of the people being. The relationship between anthropologist’s ethnographic fieldwork and the claims they make are rooted in the events that occur and the methodologies employed when working with a specific group of…

I won't forget the enthusiasm of the students when their teacher told them that I was going to be helping out for the day. The first thing that I did was introducing myself and saying three things about me. The teacher then came to me and explained how the day was going to go. The plan was to start with math then move on to reading before resses started.…

    a) How did it go? When reflecting on Sweeney elementary school field day and teacher observation, I could make many comparisons to the Book Becoming a Master Teacher. When running field day activities you noticed right away a universal discipline was employed. The system was more on the side of assertive disciple, when seeing students off task or misbehaving they would receive a warning, when continuing to misbehave they would be asked to sit-out or be removed from the activity. This system worked really well because all students had a clear understanding of behavioral expectations.…

I was excited because I love working with children, and was not able to get into a class with field placement. I was also excited because learning concepts and implementing them are very different. I had the pleasure of being in my first field placement last semester and I never have learned so much from an experience.
