Ferdinand Magellan was a very effective leader. Magellan was a smart man who always knew what to do, he was able to make the hard choices in tough situations, and he cared for his crew members and their well-being.

Magellan was born in 1480 into a wealthy Portuguese family, but it was not for Portugal that he set forth on his famous around the world expedition, it was for Spain. In 1517 Magellan went to the King of Portugal to ask for his permission to set out for the Orient, there he would gather a lot of spices and return. The mutiny was a very long and strategic grab for power. Late the night of the mutiny, the group of disloyal men met at the sea to start their mutiny. Capitán Quesada, Captain Cartagena, bishops son, Elanco, a veteran mariner, and a corps of thirty armed seamen. The men boarded the San Antonio and took control of it. Once they controlled the San Antonio they turned the vessel into a battleship. The mutiny spread to two other ships. The Victoria and Concepcion were both under the command of the mutiny. The Santiago was the only ship that remained neutral. Soon after Magellan learned that the mutiny was underway, the San Antonio was captured by Captain Quesada in the name of the mutiny. Later, Quesada sent a list of demands to Magellan. Quesada declared that he was in charge of the fleet and that he intended to end the harsh treatment Magellan had inflicted on the officers and the crew. He would feed them better and he would not endanger their lives; Quesada also declared that when he got command of the fleet, then he would return to Spain.
