The word seems rather pointless since the phrase “thrown out of a window” exists, however, the word has an air of mystery around it. Even the exact language the word is stemmed from is hard to place. Etymonline hypothesizes that the word is most likely derived from the Latin word fenestra meaning window but states that “some linguists link fenestra with Greek verb phainein "to show"” while “others see in it an Etruscan borrowing, based on the suffix -(s)tra.” To fit more modern times the word defenestration has changed over time to mean: “a usually swift dismissal or expulsion as from a political party or office” (Merriam-Webster
