“One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” This line states that we are all one nation, no matter your race, sexuality, religion, or gender. My vision for America is that someday we can all start living by the pledge of allegiance. Did you know that, starting at a young age, black children face inequality in their schools? Even after the government made school integration mandatory, studies show that many schools were still divided by race and gender. The studies concluded that black girls were suspended at higher rates than all other girls and most white boys.…
Journal 4 This week we began to discuss hiring and promotion decisions and affirmative action. One of the topics mentioned in hiring and promotion decisions is sex stereotyping. This issue is important to me because I grew up being told that girls do this and boys do that. I have four brothers and one sister that I didn’t really get along with. This led to me spending a lot more time rough housing with my brothers.…
She would be able to address inequality and social justice issues that families face directly through contacts with social/ political sectors. Laura also involves other individual professionals such as education counselors, judicial counselors to advocate for change. The families still have Laura, but also they now have access to other professionals that have direct connections to resources, services and programs. Empowerment means to be able to have someone who works on behalf or with you that has your best interest and wants you to be successful. They give encouragement and focus on the positive about you.…
Race and gender are usually questioned whether they exist, exist as natural kind, or exist as products of the society. In this paper, I will talk about Nagel and Wilkes’ ideas on personhood, and how they are related to natural kinds. Then, I will present and compare between Haslanger and Sveinsdottir’s accounts on gender and between Mills and Spencer’s account on race. Finally, I will explain why race and gender can’t cease to exist.…
The Critical Race Feminism and the Critical Race Theory (CRT) can be used with the self-identity and politics of black women’s hair texture, but the Critical Race Feminism would be even more fitting to use within black women and black hair. In addition, the Critical Race Feminism theory is a feminist perspective of the Critical Race Theory. The basic concept of Critical Race Feminism brings out the gendered aspects of injustice, which can be related to the need of respecting and the normalization of Africana-textured hair. Asch (2001) has stated that the feminist theory does specifically address issues of power, oppression, and conflict for women in the American society, the Critical Race Feminism theory goes into deeper understanding of how…
It is hardly controversial that there is an extensive claim that certain groups have more power over the others, and that the conception behind sexism and racism still exists. Whereas when privilege or poverty is mentioned, the media receives vast backlash. This is because, the world privilege can be perceived in many ways.…
Intersectionality-Race and Gender Relations In order to understand race, class, gender, and sexuality we must understand these ideas as individuals, and how they work as a collective. Intersectionality is using these components to discriminate against a group of people in more than one way. It’s important because it shows how a person can be discriminated against because of different factors, for example, Black women face both racism, and sexism. Understanding how intersectionality works is important because with that approach we understand different struggles.…
The ending of slavery during the 19th century was only the beginning of another major battle for Black Americans. Although the captivity of the black body took place over a century ago, it has shaped the way Black people, Black women in particular, are treated in American society. White supremacist and racist ideology that began during slavery have evolved from explicit racial cues such as the lynching and beating of the black body to more implicit ones that have made their way into mainstream media, one of the most important agents of socialization. Implicit racial cues that range from playing in degrading roles to not being casted at all have the power to shape the way consumers create reality, which in some cases, can be just as harmful…
These two chapters talks about the process of black women fought for their womanhood and motherhood and how did their impact on white women. What surprised me was that black women were leading white women in the fight of gaining women’s right and changed women’s attitude on domesticity. They sent out a message that women not only can work at home taking care of family but also can go into labor force and earn money to support family. The cult of domesticity was a cage for women. They have the urge for self-actualization so that they want to join the work force as men do.…
In contrast to the previous two theories, feminist have based…
Feminist ideals are seen everywhere from celebrities like Beyoncé, who empower women through music, to advertisements tackling sexism. While corporations may “use feminism to sell their products,” “selling feminism” (Zeisler) raises questions as to why corporations would promote feminism in the first place. Is there a genuine support to embrace women’s rights, or are corporations willing to say just about anything to make profit off of consumers? An advertisement that sells feminism is Verizon Wireless’ “Inspire Her Mind” commercial. Verizon sells feminism by asserting that young girls can overcome sexist gender norms that limit them from pursuing “masculine” fields of study.…
Race, class, and sexuality, as we have all been taught are heavily intertwined, especially when it comes to the Americas and Europe. Delving deeper into the history of interactions between individuals of different races and social classes during the era of colonization the origins of these ideals surrounding sexuality are made apparent. The degradation of culture as well as the manipulation of sex for the benefit of European colonizers in Hawaii and the rest of the Americas was discovered by the interactions that occurred during the age of exploration. Relationships between African slaves and their white masters also gives insight into the policing of black bodies as well as the significance of race when it comes to the treatment of women.…
I love music and cannot live a day without music. I listen to music most of time, such as when I am driving, working, doing exercises, homework, and taking a bath. As a background activity, listening to music helps to positively affect mood, productivity, and even intelligence. The average person spends several hours a day listening to music, whether they see it as a main activity or just as something to take up space in the background. Further more, music can be a driving force in society.…
Empowerment theory: Empowerment theory is a social process that assists individuals in gaining control and fostering power over their own lives and environment. This theory promotes self-efficacy, consciousness, personal responsibility, dual perspective, and a reduction in self-blame. (Langer & Lietz, 2015). Strengths in this theory include the consistency with social work values and ethics; it addresses oppression, discrimination and marginalization on a political and clinical scale, and is in line with the person in environment perspective. Limitations of this theory could be that there are so many skills within the theory, that it would be difficult to assess the actual success rate of using empowerment theory based interventions.…
Feminist theory analyzes gender stratification through the intersection of gender, race, and class. Feminism is not a single theory, but a set of evolving theoretical perspectives. Feminist argue women are disadvantaged because society is patriarchal. Patriarchy is a system of sociological organization in which men have a disproportionate share of power. One of the first actions taken by feminist, was the seneca falls convention.…
