My project was completed in collaboration with Feed My Sheep, under the tutelage of Joyce Kawakami (Feed My Sheep’s CEO, Founder, and Board Secretary) and Scott Hopkins (Feed My Sheep’s Operations Director). My researched focused on the Hunger and Malnutrition. My goal was to look into a program that addresses both issues simultaneously. Feed My Sheep was the perfect organization to work with as they make an effort on providing a heathier diet to the hunger population on the island of Maui.

Some of the produce that Feed My Sheep receives are from wealthy individuals in the community. These individuals have big yards filled with varieties of fruits and vegetables, most of which I wouldn’t have been able to experience picking without my involvement with the organization. Lemons, limes, avocadoes, starfruits, guavas, macadamia nuts, coconuts, and papayas were some of the produce that we were fortunate enough to harvest. They also received cucumbers, zucchinis, and arrays of organic greens from local farmers, pineapples from Maui Gold Pineapple Company, and many other produce from Maui’s Costco. The staple food, such as brown rice, wheat pasta, beans, and canned tuna, are made possible by the funding provided by the County of Maui. Most of the non-perishable food for the non-cook bags are also from the same funding. The other food, such as milk and other dairy products, are donated by Maui Meadows. There are weekly food distribution events for Kihei, Lahiana, Kahului and Kahala, and monthly for Hana. Feed My Sheep is unique is a sense that they take the food that they provide to the neighborhoods themselves, which is great as it eliminates the issue of not having the access to transportation.
