Manolete was born in Cordoba, the heart of bullfighting nation. His uncle, a small time matador, was killed by a bull of the feared Miura breed. His mom was a widow of a bullfighter when she married his dad, likewise a matador, who was so poor he couldn’t provide anything for the family when Manolete was 5 years old.
Manolete turned into an expert matador at age 17. He and his two friends had put their money together and framed a group called the Cordovan Caliphs and set out to make their fortune. He was found by previous bullfighter Jose Camara, who showed him to not focus so much on his style but more on the respecting the career that many of his relatives passed on to each other.
