How Does Fashion Affect Self Esteem

Adolescence is a crucial stage in an individual’s life. It is at that stage where a person is subjected to many changes that are both physiological and psychological. A change that is pertinent to observe is self-esteem. Over the years, there have been many studies about self-esteem and how it has affected countless aspects of life such as fashion. Fashion and self-esteem go hand in hand. There have been several researches involving this topic, in which the word fashion takes various meanings from school uniforms to designer clothing.

Hence, self-esteem stops deriving from school uniforms at a certain age. Besides school uniforms, self-confidence can originate from designer clothing. In a study by Pierre Beaudoin and Marie J. Lachance, entitled “Determinants of Brand Sensitivity”, they researched which factors can affect a person’s opinion of designer clothing. In this study, the independent variables were the different factors like friends, family, media, consumer competence, and self-esteem. They hypothesized that " girls, adolescents with higher economic level, and those with a higher personal income would be more likely to be brand sensitive than their counterpart.” (Beaudoin and Lachance, 2006 p.318). With a sample size of 1012 high school students between the ages of 12 and 17 years old. These students came from urban schools in Canada. The schools were chosen based on the different economic levels that were chosen by the Ministry of education, whom previously calculated the mean of income levels of people living around the school areas. For Beaudoin and Lachance’s study, they used the highest and lowest ranking schools as well as a middle-class ranking school. Researcher decided to take classes in specific subjects so that a student is incapable of doing the survey twice. The questionnaires was composed of personal questions, such as the amount of money they spend each week and how did they get this money as well as statements in which students had to use the 5 point Likert
