This paper discusses the arguments surrounding the legalization of single game betting and what possible resolution may be reached on the matter. There has been much debate on whether the act of single game betting should be legalized, and there are several parties that are speaking out regarding this matter. Two of the main parties that have played a major role in this issue are Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, and the state of New Jersey. The outcome of this issue will have a heavy impact on the sports industry and the gaming industry. In 2014, Adam Silver came out to the public to discuss his views on sports betting, and why he feels that legalization of single game sports betting would be a beneficial move for leagues and fans. As fantasy sports sites like FanDuel and DraftKings have seen an increase in participation over the years, leagues like the NBA have come to agreements with fantasy sites, which give them an equity stake in the company that they can profit off of. Fantasy sports play is continuing to grow as more and more individuals decide to participate. Although some do not consider this a sport, they do enjoy collecting their winnings. This is an excellent argument for legalization of single game betting because it is similar to fantasy sports and the earnings obtained from participation. If the government and society felt that gambling and betting were entirely bad for the economy, they would not have allowed for the legalization of casinos, fantasy sports, and other legal bets like horse races. All of these types of wagering have risks, and people decide to take these risks when they participate because they hope that the benefits will outweigh the …show more content…
There is always the fear of point shaving and cheating, but the opposition feels that by openly allowing betting, players and referees would be more prone to rig games in hopes of obtaining a profit for themselves. Point shaving is easier to do in multi-scoring sports like basketball, and that is one of the biggest fears of legalization for the NBA.
