The Family Medical Leave Act permits qualified employees of a covered employer to take off from the job for specified family and medical purposes while their position at work is safeguarded. The employee takes the leave with continuous health insurance coverage, with all the same terms and conditions, just as if the employee was still at work (Gómez-Mejía et al. 2016). For the law enforcement officials, they must be employed at the job for twelve months with one thousand two hundred and fifty hours accumulated within that period is allowed to take up to twelve weeks of an unpaid break from work. FMLA’s purpose is to assist employees balance with their work and family duties. This time off from work allows officers to take reasonable unpaid leave for a particular family for medical reasons. The act also wishes to encourage equal employment opportunities for men and women. The rule became active in 2009, then the updates for FMLA wants to implement military leave that was enacted under the National Defense Authorization Act. Different regulations apply to local educational departments. The Department of Labor administration utilizes FMLA for their entitlements, just like most federal employees (Family & Medical Leave., 2016). My Wife and I just had our third son in January. I had every intention of the using FMLA. However, they were going to start with my bonus, acquired, vacation, then sick time. The representative at human resources advised that technically they could start with whatever category of time that my commander would allow. I had just returned from being assigned to a specialized unit, so I had not called in sick for six years and had acquired over a thousand hours in sick
