Growing up, I watched both my father and grandfather suffer the symptoms of asthma. They are both allergic to cats, both have severe allergies, and both use an inhaler. Thankfully, I have been fortunate and have never been diagnosed with asthma.
According to the American Lung Association (2017), having a parent with asthma makes me three to six times more likely to develop asthma over the course of my life. In a recent study, researchers found that children who have been diagnosed with asthma were twice as likely to have at least one parent with the condition. One major precaution I can take is to avoid smoke. I should avoid lighting incense, candles, fire, fireworks, and of course, never smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products. In addition, minimizing my exposure to dust mites and other types of allergens may also delay or prevent any symptoms of asthma I may develop.
I have been fortunate and have not developed asthma, I am aware that because of my family medical history that I am more susceptible to the condition. While compiling the information and reflecting on my family medical history, it was hard to ignore the ages of my grandparents when they passed away.
