Family is without a doubt something every culture has; but what makes every family from every culture different is the way they define it. For some can be immediate blood relatives. For others can be friends, or even pets. The way one person sees family can be based on their culture or the way their live was shaped in the culture they are living in. The definition of family provided in the textbook is “two or more people who consider themselves related by blood, marriage, or adoption” (Henslin, 452). Even though each culture is different there are themes that seem to be in every family. With these themes there comes patterns that all societies establish. This perspective is a micro-level one. Then there is conflict theory this theory focuses on the dysfunctional parts of society. Conflict theorist see society as a group of people fighting for scarce resources where the elites take everything oppressing those in the bottom of the social classes who struggle the most. At last functionalism this theory like the conflict theory is at a macro level. In contrast with the conflict theory where they focus on the negative aspects of society functionalist focus on how society work together as a whole to be functional. The way functionalist see family is as an important contributor to society. Because it socialized children which is where most of the socializing will come from, it also creates economic production, care for the sick and aged, recreation, sexual control, and reproduction. It is believed in this theory that those are the six basic needs a family fulfills to be able to survive in a society (Henslin, 455). Also the reinforcement of the incest taboo seems to help avoid role confusion within families, this also helps with the socialization and the search for a mate outside the family. The way they define family is based on their cultures values and norms. Even though every culture is diverse the way they perceive family is somewhat similar in some patterns and ideas. While some cultures have nuclear and extended families there are some cultures that just have a family. Based on the reading and research your own world view shapes the way one can perceive who are part of their family.
